I had a an idea a while back about shooting dancers in a thin pool of water with high speed strobes. Finally got some time to put it together, and was able to schedule it at the same time we were testing a high speed video camera. We were able to put a quick clip together from the footage with the test camera, below, along with some behind the scenes
footage. Props to all the dancers for loaning us their amazing talent,
it was a crazy fun day. Images and videos after the jump.

Our prop stylist Cathy was recently interviewed for a day-in-the-life article for Feast STL. It's a quick read, and has some fun tidbits and a glimpse into Cathy's hectic life as The Seeker. Check it out.
Just for grins, we slapped together some footage shot by our Pinewood Derby car's onboard webcam. Might not be the best-quality footage, but it's a unique point of view nonetheless.
Once again, Bruton Stroube nerded out and put a streaming web cam into our car for the Coolfire Pinewood Derby. This year, however, we improved our aerodynamics and moved up from 7th to 3rd place in the final standings.
Check out some pics of our Eric Johnson-hand-carved speed/technology machine (three more after the break). We'll be posting a montage of the car's first-person footage in the next couple days.

Greg was in the studio making some movin' pictures recently, so we thought you might like to see what he's been up to. As an added bonus, we'll give you a peek at some of the elaborate rigging and setup that goes into his beer shoots. See the stills after the break.

Brandon recently did an interview for the St. Louis Egotist, which features news and information for area creatives and ad folk. We were pretty busy promoting the new music video we did for The Nadas, so the article has slid down the home page a few slots, but you can still get the full scoop here. It's a pretty cool piece complete with some nerdy tech information and a handful of Brandon's images.
We just finished putting the final touches on the music video we made for The Nadas. Due to the band's busy tour schedule, we only had about a half of day to shoot them, so we had four cameras rolling on every take. The storyline was shot later (also in one day) on location. All footage was shot with Canon 5D Mark IIs and 7Ds and Canon glass.
Check out The Nadas' newest album, Almanac, on iTunes.
Mandi also got some great behind the scenes stills that you can see after the break.
UPDATE: We've added more BTS stills from the farm location, courtesy of James and Steve. [Read More]
Eric was on location recently shooting some nifty garage accessories for some pretty serious showroom displays. The trick was to get all the pieces to line up life-sized so they could be printed at 8 ft. by 14 ft. The displays will use the photos as a backdrop for the actual Craftsman cabinets to interact with. Keep an eye out at your local Sears store for the final product. [Read More]
So we got a new dolly today. And what do we do at Bruton Stroube Studios when we get new toys? We do what's necessary to make sure they meet our stringent durability requirements. In other words: trial by fire (fire = Greg).
Oh, and check out our new pal Tim. He was chomping at the bit (or, in this case, the wall) to call dibs on the next ride.
We're happy to announce the first project with our new director/editor/beachcomber Tim Wilson is now live. If you happen to live in the Springfield area, you can catch it live on the air in HD. If you're outside the area, you can watch it right here.
The spot was created entirely with still photographs (we edited from over 190GB of them), some of which were enhanced by Tim's post-production powers. Keep an eye out for our next installment, we're planning on getting cozy with Tim, we're setting up a little session to get to know the man behind the motion graphics.
Bruton Stroube is happy to announce Tim Wilson is joining the BSS family as of today, Monday 3/15. Tim is a multi talented editor, director, motion graphics artist and overall very friendly human being. We'd love for Tim to say a few words today...but he's hit the ground running and is involved in a 3 day video shoot at this very moment. Stay tuned! Interview and more after these messages...
As we brainstormed ideas for the 2009 Holiday Card to blur the line between stills and video. We ended up shooting with two cameras side-by-side (as you can see in our behind the scenes video.) But in order to make the dualiecam system work smoothly, we did a lot of testing along the way. I don't want to ruin the surprise, so let's just go to the video.
We thought it's about time for us to highlight one of our new favorite capabilities-- motion graphics. We've been dabbling in video (mostly evidenced by our collection of behind the scenes vids showcased here) for some time, but we're really feeling like we're ready for primetime in 2010. Check out our newest reel:
Before checking out for the holidays, we chopped together a quick Behind the Scenes video in case you were wondering how we pulled off our magic stop action moves.
The tools we used include, but are not limited to the following:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EOS 1D Mark II-N
70-200mm f/2.8 Canon Lenses
Broncolor Grafit A2 power packs
Generic Cheese Puffs
Enjoy!
The crew at Bruton Stroube Studios would like to wish you the happiest of holidays. So cuddle up in your Slanket with a cup of cocoa, and enjoy this year's installment of our annual holiday "card."

For those of you at the Upside Downy Face Gallery Showing on Dec. 4, you may have noticed that our behind-the-scenes video was on Mute-- we couldn't bear the cacophony of the film's soundtrack battling the DJ skills of Mr. Jim Harper. But now the video is live online, for all to see how many times Brandon botched his intro lines.
And don't worry-- there's lots more to the Upside Downy Face multimedia experience-- lots and lots of pictures from the gallery showing will be up soon.
cheers.
Bruton Stroube Studios would like to cordially invite you, America, to the opening of the Upside Downy Face art show.
On December 4th, The Tin Can Tavern ( Downtown Location) will be home to 12 original and all-new images by yours truly, Brandon "Major Brows" Voges. Accompanying the artwork will be food, music, elegant canned beers, and the premiere of the behind the scenes video, which chronicles the process from start to finish.
Hope to see you there.
I don't know what buttons you clicked to get to our blog, but if you didn't already pass by our home page, make sure you stop by and have a ganders. We've re-tooled, re-designed and biggered just about everything we've got.
We've got new fonts, new colors, WAY BIGGER images, and an intro to our sick new motion graphics capabilities. All that's left to say is BAM.
We just wanted to remind you that football season is upon us. Which is fun. We also wanted to show you this photo of Brandon, who got on the tracks just before the train came through... Ouch.

P.S. tailgateapproved.com has been picked up by Uncrate-- one of our favorite manblogs.
UPDATE: After the first of the TV commercials aired, nerd tech blog Gizmodo picked it up as well.
We know you were all on pins and needles waiting for this. So without further ado may we present to you the specabulous footage from the Bruton Stroube Studios Pinewood Derby Car...
Also, Coolfire has posted a bunch of photos and whatnots from race night on their Facebook page.
Another year, another Coolfire Pinewood Derby in the books. This year, Bruton Stroube's car meshed the nerd chic of wireless technology with the fashion sensibility of an awkward tween with a dash of hot nasty speed for good measure.
The Bruton Stroube car, lovingly referred to as Bedazzled, won its first few races, but eventually succumbed to the purely-built-for-speed-with-no-live-feed-webcam cars in the later rounds.
In our next issue, we'll share some of the video that came out of our machine. In this issue, we'll talk about what went into the construction of the car. [Read More]
Once again, we, the people of Bruton Stroube Studios, have entered Coolfire Media's Pinewood Derby. Last year, we fell short in the speed category. This year we're all about style and functionality. Well, not really...check it out:

It's always cool to see your projects come together in the real world. And this time, it was larger than life. We did a shoot for the new Nintendo DSi-- which is a fancy new handheld video game/social networking/goofing off device that has been updated with a camera and all sorts of fun editing tools.
Anyway, we did a day of shooting models playing around with these things and making goofy faces. In the end, the images were put together to make the wrapper for the DSi Tour Bus, which went all over the place to demo the new device. Lots more pics after the jump.

We stumbled upon another set of packaging graced with BSS photography-- this time at the local REI store. Eric shot the food images for PowerBar's Bites-- delicious little nuggets packed with protein, carbs, and all the other good stuff to keep you firing on all cylinders. There are three flavors available: Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Raisin (not pictured). They're about 3 bucks a bag, and are pretty darn tasty.
When Hill's Science Diet needed new images for their pet food packaging, they called on the good folks at Bruton Stroube Studios to fill their needs. As those new packages hit the shelves in Hong Kong, they caught the eye of an acquaintance of Eric Johnson, and she snapped this photo:
The store was still switching over from the older packaging to the new, which is why you see both vintages side by side. In the middle is the new, fancier Science Diet package-- featuring Saba, who happens to be Eric Johnson's Siberian Husky. So not only are Eric's images reaching consumers across the world, but they get to see the smiling face of his furry friend as well.
SIDE NOTE: The shelf prices are in Hong Kong dollars (7.75 HKD = $1.00 US)
Cruisin' through the supermarket, and guess what I saw? Why, photos by Brandon Voges, of course... You might be wondering how we got such a genuine facial expression out of our talented barker. Naturally, we made him bark like a real ballpark beerslinger. Shouts of "Cold Beer!" and "Miller Lite!" echoed through the studio all day long.
Anyone up for a cold one?
We just got word that Syreah from Stella Mora put together a video from the shoot we did with them a couple weeks back. Guess who's on the soundtrack...
Did you know our friend Jim Harper (of 4 Alarm Studio fame) is in a band called Stella Mora? Did you know that we had a trampoline? Did you know that this is the same formula I used on my last blog post, but written with words instead of math?
Well this is what you get: delightful, floaty swimmingness.

Answer:
Not too long ago, our friends at Waylon Advertising approached us with a very unique project-- to create a 30-second TV spot from still images. To add a little spice, they also noted that we would be shooting on location at the nursery at St. John's Mercy Hospital (read: limited production access), and that we would need to turn around the images (we'd need hundreds of stills to fill a 30-second spot) in less than a day. We recently got a very interesting Thank You note in the mail. Not to toot our own horn that we would do something Thank-You-worthy (though we do like a little 'toot-toot' from time to time). Anyway, an Italian photographer and some of his homies had seen the Paintball Office video, and decided to take some of the techniques and run with them for their annual Christmas card (shown below).
The newest edition to our line of holiday cards is now live! To see the poster version and the cards from years past, click here.
We recently got word that one of Greg's images was nominated for a Black & White Spider Award. Thousands of images were submitted from 62 countries across the globe, so getting the nod is a pretty cool thing.
Greg's image, Elle's Window #1, can be seen amongst the other nominees in the Architectural - Pro category at the Black & White Spider Awards Gallery. It's definitely worth it to take a few minutes and check out all the other nominees and winners-- there are a lot of talented photographers whose work is in that gallery. If you don't have the time to peruse the gallery, here's Greg's image in all its glory.
Congrats Greg!
Over the winter, Greg put together a pretty killer book shot we called "The Exploding Martini." Over the summer, we put together the behind-the-scenes footage so you can get a glimpse of what went into this complex production.
Enjoy.

To celebrate my 2-month wedding anniversary, I thought I'd share with our loyal blog readers some of the ludicrous nerdery that went down at the reception on 6.7.08.
To start things off, I brought in Bruton Stroube's own Brandon Voges to run a photo booth in one corner of the reception hall. He had me shoot from a similar setup at his wedding reception, and the results were awesome (if I do say so myself). So I asked him to return the favor and shoot at my reception.

I just happened to be cruising around the ol' interweb recently and took a trip down memory lane-- I watched the Paintball Office video again, and then came across a little interview piece Brandon did as a result.
The guys over at StudioLighting.net had also seen the Paintball Office video, and they dropped us a line to see if we would be interested in doing a interview to find out what demented individual would shoot someone in the face with a paintball gun. Well, Brandon was that guy...so here is the interview page. Or download the mp3 here.
OK, so it's not actually Matt who's pregnant... It's his wife, Angela, who is carrying his spawn. But Matt is doing his part by putting on some sympathy weight. That's been going on for several years now, though, so we're not quite sure if it actually counts as sympathy weight.
Anyway, congrats to the Siemers. May your first child be a masculine child, unless it's a girl. That would make for uncomfortable social gatherings.
Short shorts, cheap beer, rock n’ roll, and tube socks-- four things in life with which you can never go wrong. Miraculously, all four collided for an amazing photo shoot Brandon did with The Saps, a killer band from Chicago, IL. The Saps rocked our world the minute they swaggered onto the racquetball court with their heads held high and their dignity left at the door. We had a blast shooting them, and they’re coming to St. Louis on Friday (May 30) for a show at The Underground. It’s guaranteed to be chock-full of fun and debauchery. Check out their Myspace page for more details.
Thanks again to Dan, Dan, Joey & Ryan for a great time and some breathtaking pictures! Yes, I said breathtaking…
Rock on!

Not too long ago, Jon brought in his beloved poodle, Oberon, for a pet food shoot. Obi was alongside 20-some other dogs photographed as options for the food bags.
Although Obi didn't make the final cut and get his mug in pet owners' homes all over America, he did get a full spa treatment. Too bad he didn't think it was as fun as we did.
enjoy.
I have become rather obsessed with the Christmas Day tiger attack at the San Fransisco Zoo. In my post-attack hyper sense of preparedness I’ve thought long and hard about what I would do if I saw a tiger wandering the grounds of our beloved St. Louis Zoo.

Friday marked the last day in the studio for Tom's trusty production assistant, Sherry. She decided to move on to a job that was closer to home, and that would give her an opportunity to handle more baby poop.
So to send her off, we wanted to fill her office to overflowing with babies, but when we realized that was cost-prohibitive and potentially in direct violation with many state and federal laws, we decided to use balloons instead.
The following is a chronicle of the festivities. No babies were harmed in the making of this film. Several hundred balloons, however, were totally harmed.

After hitting a couple of snags with some music licenses, we're re-releasing the paintball office video with a new soundtrack, courtesy of yours truly.
If you haven't seen it yet, give it an ogle-- this video was picked up by blogs all over the place, netting us over a hundred thousand YouTube hits and making it our most successful video yet. Every time I make a new video, I think about how the paintball video set the bar. It was a semi-enjoyable nightmare to compose a new soundtrack for this video, so let us know what you think.

From Jeremy DeWeese, President of ASMP:
"For the emerging photographer, you are symbol of what it is that one could aspire to become. For that reason, the ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers) board has convened and bestowed upon you the honor of being the first recipient of the "Photographic Vanguard Award." It is my hope that you will honor me by allowing me to work with you to create an event that highlights your accomplishments, by presenting a retrospective of your work, and by allowing those that have worked with you, and been inspired by you, an opportunity to share that with the community."
Event date will be May 8th. We'll post an article with details soon as we get it.
Congratulations Greg! You go boy!
Out in Colorado for a weekend of snowboarding and happened to cross paths with the man, the legend, the frosty mustache himself, Mr. Tom Stringer. Here he is at the North Bowl (maybe 1-2 minutes from watching me roll down the run "White Crown"). Here is a nice big breckenridge map, in case you want to try to find out where we were.
Cheers to daylight savings time!
Mmmmmm...schwag! Our funky new Bruton-Stroube hats are in. We have two styles, military and regular baseball cap. The military are in black and green, and the baseball caps are in beige and green (hats are modeled below by the very pretty, and new studio member, Mr. James McKenzie). All the hats have a red tag on the side that has a small logo stitched into it. If you'd like to get a hold of one of these limited edition hats, drop Tom or Beau a line to see how.
Happy New Year from Bruton-Stroube Studios!
